Welcome to Medicine for Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are not only doctors, they are medical specialists. Many psychiatrists want to maintain their confidence in contemporary medical knowledge and skills. Physical health and mental health are inextricably linked, with poor health status in either domain increasing the risk of illness in the other. Many psychiatric interventions are associated with adverse physical health consequences that psychiatrists should be able to recognize and manage.

THE 5TH RANZCP CPD ENDORSED MEDICINE FOR PSYCHIATRISTS CONFERENCE  WILL BE POSTPONED UNTIL 2021

Due to the concerns and uncertainty in regards to the impact that the coronavirus pandemic will have, it is with regret and after careful consideration that the conference will be postponed until 2021.

The viability of conference depends on delegates and presenters being able to attend.  There are increasing travel restrictions being put into place and travel insurers are excluding cover for illness or travel disruption related to the coronavirus pandemic.  Health boards are issuing guidance advising against international travel, including for educational purposes.  There is an additional risk that delegates and speakers may not be able to attend the conference due to higher demands on health services.

Delegates who have already booked will be refunded and we hope to have your support for the next conference.  It is likely that the conference will be held at the same venue and time in 2021.

We apologise for any inconvenience and hope that you will not personally be affected by the pandemic.  Hopefully we will be able to enjoy the conference in better circumstances next year.

The 2021 conference will continue to focus on the most pertinent medical aspects and common comorbidities of psychiatric conditions.  The presenters are expert clinicians and the content of the conference is clinically focused to enhance up to date clinical knowledge and skills. The 2021 conference has two more presentations than in 2018 with three new topics of Sleep Medicine, Radiology for the Psychiatrist as well as Falls, Frailty and Medication Rationalization in the Elderly.

This event has been endorsed by the RANZCP as CPD activity code: ED000046, and each hour of participation can be claimed under Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 4.1).

The RANZCP report “Keeping Body and Mind Together: Improving the physical health and life expectancy of people with serious mental illness” published in 2015 states that to “influence clinical practice to effect better health outcomes for people with a mental illness... from the perspective of the RANZCP, addressing this important challenge begins with the recognition and acknowledgement by all psychiatrists that a key part of their role is to help their patients manage their physical health” and “as medical doctors, psychiatrists have a clear responsibility to help patients to manage their physical health. In the RANZCP’s view, this is a core part of being a psychiatrist.”

"This is the second time I attended the Medicine for Psychiatrists conference, and I really think it’s a fantastic forum for psychiatrist to brush up on their medical skills, knowledge. The topics were all very relevant and the speakers impressed me with how they succinctly applied the information/knowledge to a psychiatric perspective. I would recommend the conference to anyone working in psychiatry, obviously in particular to CL psychiatrists."
